According to a new study increased inthe availability of marijuana products may be driving an increase in emergency room visits by inebriatedtoddlers. The researchers have found that the number of admitted children is increased by 133% in France over an 11 year period.
Marijuana products are one of the most harmful drugs in the world. Researchers are warning parents that it’s very dangerous to keep it around children.
Marijuana intoxication can occur when a child accidentally consumes a marijuana product or inhales marijuana smoke. Symptoms can vary, based on the child’s age and size. It includes sleepiness, difficulty breathing, seizures or even coma.
Dr. Isabelle Claudet, lead author of the study, stated that France has the highest rate of drug consumption in Europe even though marijuana is illegal in the country.
The researchers inspected data collected from 2004 to 2014 on children under age 6 who were admitted to 24 pediatric emergency rooms. During that time, 235 children were admitted for intoxication with symptoms like seizures, altered consciousness, and euphoria.
Recreational marijuana is legal in eight US states and the District of Columbia. Besides, the medical marijuana is legal in 29 states, though the high concentration of THC is still a concern, especially in edible products.
Dr. G. Sam Wang, a pediatric toxicologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora stated that the result of this study also makes sense with what we’ve been seeing in Colorado. There are a lot of new products, a lot of concentrated products that people ingest.
He said that parents need to understand that kids can get sick from this material.
